New Video: American Revolution

What year was the Boston Tea Party? Which countries helped the Americans win the American Revolution? What year did the war end? No, you don't have to use Google to answer these questions... just watch Rock Asylum's latest video, "American Revolution". The video was produced by John Sheridan and Karen LaRossa with the assistance of the 4th and 5th grade Rock Asylum After School Club at P.S. 119 in Brooklyn, NY. We hope you love it. Watch out the Redcoats are coming!!!!!!

Nearing The Finish Line

There are just two days left to the "Number 8 Spring Tour" fundraising campaign and we are only just 10% away from our goal! That's right, we are just under $2,000 away from reaching our goal of $16,000 and with your help we can get there. Right now we have 2 new songs and 4 new music videos in the works and the money we raise will fund these projects. To give you an idea of the process we go through with the kids when writing a song and creating a video we've uploaded a behind-the-scenes video of our very first song Scientific Method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEGBuusw-lo&feature=youtu.be

We hope this video will inspire you to donate (if you haven't already) and/or spread the word to your friends and get them to donate so we can complete the next 2 songs and 4 videos.

New Rock Asylum Video Launches on Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, Rock Asylum Foundation is releasing our newest video, "Plastic Ocean". Written, produced, and recorded by the students of the Harbour School HK in Hong Kong, this song/video exemplifies the very real and critical issues we all face, wherever we are in the world. Finished in only four days under the direction of RAF founder Paulie Z and teaching musician Tony Cortes, the students were responsible for coming up with their own topic as well as storyboarding and choreography for the video. With serendipitous timing, students chose to learn and write about environmental studies. We at RAF take our hats off to a dedicated and talented group of students and staff at the Harbour School HK. In the course of providing for your education, you gave us back something invaluable.

Ni Hao Hong Kong!

Whoever thought Plato would be the bridge between Rock Asylum Foundation and the prestigious Harbour School on the other side of the globe?

The first image on The Harbour School’s homepage is a quote from the famous philosopher, “Do not train children to learning by force and harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves (high 5 Plato!). Plato knew it back in 400 B.C., and RAF and The Harbour School know it today, so for one week (April 8-12), THS has hired RAF founder Paulie Z, along with RAF teaching musician Tony Cortes, to come visit the students at the Hong Kong school and run an intensive workshop doing what we do best. They’ll work with the students to devise their own topic for a song, then write, compose, record, direct, and shoot their project all in that time.

We’re obviously excited about this fantastic opportunity to work with these students and educators, and look forward to sharing their project with you in the near future. Stay tuned!

Our Annual Fundraising Campaign Begins

Today we are announcing the launch of our annual giving campaign, the “ Number 8 Spring Tour”. As you all know, what we do is crucially dependent on public support and individual contributions. This year, in keeping with the Rock Star “go BIG or go home!” mantra, we at RAF have committed to going BIG!

That’s why we’re kicking off the spring semester with this campaign. In the next 8 weeks, we’re looking to you, our core team that’s gotten us to where we are today, to help us raise $16,000 by May 8th. This $16,000 represents 8% of our fundraising goal of $200,000.00 for the upcoming school year, that will help us start and finish.. yes.. 8 projects already in development. We are working on writing and recording 2 new educational rock songs, producing 4 new music videos and adding 2 new schools to our roster bringing us to a total of 8 (you see what we did there?).

With your help we can make all this happen and more. A few dollars here and there add up very quickly so please consider contributing to this wonderful cause and then forward to YOUR friends and family and have them do the same. Visit this link below to donate now:

New Honorary Board Members

Rock Asylum Foundation would like to welcome drum legends Tony and Elaine La Russa, Mike Portnoy and Rikki Rocket, and axe wielding legend Dave “Snake” Sabo to our Honorary Board.

Tony La Russa is a former Major League Baseball manager and infielder, best known for his tenures as manager of the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals. La Russa managed teams to six league championships and three World Series titles, and ranks third in all-time major league wins by a manager. He and his wife Elaine founded the Animal Rescue Foundation ("ARF") which is a "No-Kill" animal shelter based in Walnut Creek, California. ARF saves abandoned and injured animals, as well as running programs to bring dog and cat visits to abused children, hospital patients, seniors and shut-ins.

Mike Portnoy, one of the most prolific and accomplished progressive rock drummers, like, ever....and industry leader Modern Drummer's Hall of Fame inductee, is a founding member of super groups Dream Theater, Transatlantic, and Adrenaline Mob. A constantly evolving artist, Portnoy has spent his career writing music to elevate generations of fans, and has also delved into the educational arena, having won Modern Drummer's award for Best Educational Video/DVD in both 2000,

Rikki Rockett comes to RAF via the iconic American pop metal band, Poison. Having shaped the course of pop metal and American music in the 80's and 90's with his signature stick twirling and energetic snare hits, Rocket now joins RAF in bringing music to another generation of future music lovers and leaders. His one request in joining was that his contribution would be "Nothin, But a Good Time." Rikki, we can pretty much guarantee that.

Last but definitely not least, we welcome Skid Row guitarist Dave “Snake” Sabo. Twenty years ago Dave’s music helped shape an entire music hungry generation of disaffected youth growing out of the era of excess. Today there’s a new generation of young minds looking to be similarly engaged by their teachers and cultural icons - a generation born to Skid Rows’ original fans no less.

We’re grateful to have these new additions to our board, and welcome them to the RAF family.

Photoshop Class Gallery

While Paulie Z and the 4th graders at P.S. 119 were writing and recording their song “Multiplication”, the 5th graders and their Photoshop teacher Walter Atkinson were hard at work illustrating the lyrics to the song.

Mr. Atkinson comes to RAF with a very specific and complementary skill set in visual art. Currently on faculty at FIT and LIM College where he teaches CAD for Fashion and Merchanding, and 3d Interior Design, he also conducts Corporate Training seminars for Fortune 500 companies such as Sears Holding. Clearly not busy enough, he generously donates his time at PS 119 as part of the Rock Asylum extended program, including a weekly after-school Photoshop class in conjunction with the songwriting class.

Last semester, the kids learned all the basics of how to work Photoshop and then applied this knowledge to their illustrations; an education in computer illustration equal to that of many college students these days. Each student in Mr. Atkinson’s class was given a section of lyrics from “Multiplication” that was written by the other class, and interpreted those lyrics into their art. The results are now available for everyone to see, and we could not be more proud of their work. Click here to view the gallery.

Kids Tees - Rock The Purple

Every music fan owns a t-shirt of their favorite band. We know. Between our founder, our board, and frankly the RA staff, we have enough KISS, Poison, Blues Traveler, Police, and AC/DC t-shirts to clothe Rhode Island. So it only made sense that Rock Asylum should provide our main constituency - the children - with the opportunity to have their own t-shirts.

The Rock Asylum tee isn't just a band or organization's t-shirt, it's their t-shirt. Since the students took part in writing the music, your kids are "with the band", and they should have the t-shirt to prove it. So get these newly on sale tees, help support your kids, and help the organization that's there to support them. Help support Rock Asylum. Click here to order yours now.

Rock Asylum Now Has Its Own Race Car

Drive fast. Rock Hard. This kid built a car to do both. This past Saturday, seven year old Rock Asylum fan Sebastian Gaudiosi and his Rockin’ Racer showed everyone at the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby what happens when inspiration meets education.

In typical RA fashion (literally, wearing a Rock Asylum tee!), Sebastian designed and built his own car, achieving an average track speed of 187 miles per hour, finishing second in the race, and looking like a rock star while doing it!

Created from a block of pine, rubber tires, and tiny metal axles, the talented young engineer’s design really caught our eye and our admiration. Sebastian’s design has the car decked out in Rock Asylum’s color, logo, and tag line, “Music Is The Key.” He is such an avid fan of RA and our work, he listened to the RA song “Scientific Method” repeatedly before creating and submitting his science fair project. When asked how he felt about RA and what it meant to him, Sebastian declared, “I love Rock Asylum’s songs and wanted all the kids in my pack to know about them!”

Sebastian, Rock Asylum Foundation would like to thank you for your devotion to us, our music, and our mission. You are the example of what we hope to achieve with every Rock Asylum student, and we look forward to your next achievements. We’re VERY proud of you, and remember, Music Is The Key!!

Rock Asylum in the News.... Again!

This past Wednesday morning, News 12 Brooklyn's Nicole Ryan was the latest to do a piece on Rock Asylum and its founder, Paulie Z.

Part of News 12's Cool At School series, the segment focused largely on the students at P.S. 196 and the release of our new video, "Rounding", written, produced, and filmed at the school by the students and Paulie Z. This latest song/video explains how to round numbers, shows real life applications such as how to leave a tip for a waiter on a check, and features the students themselves actively working out the problems, while throwing in some impressive choreography as well because this is after all, a music video.

Speaking on the success of this latest project as well as the program itself, P.S. 196 educator Rosalia Ferraro stated, "I wish every school could have this music and song to learn everything, because that's the way they learn the best."

Our congratulations again to the enormously talented students and teachers at P.S. 196, and remember, the next time you're trying to figure out the tip on a check, just repeat the lyrics to the song; "5 or more, let it soar. 4 or less, let is rest!"

New Music Videos

As we leave 2012 behind, and apropos of the holiday season, Rock Asylum is proud to present two brand new gifts to start out 2013; the videos for two new RA songs - Rounding and Multiplication.

These two new songs/videos are the result of the hard work and dedication from the students at P.S. 196, and P.S. 119, respectively. Twelve 4th grade students from each school came together during our 9-week after school program, selecting the topics, writing the lyrics, drafting the storyboards, choreographing, performing in, and directing the videos.

Both the teachers and students were surprised to find out just how much work goes into the process, but at each video’s release party, it was clear from the students’ faces, beaming with a palpable sense of pride and accomplishment that it was worth every bit of creative and physical effort. One student was even overheard excitedly asking the very important question, “Who would’ve ever guessed MATH could be so exciting?!”

We would also like to extend a special thanks to 1176 Studios, Green Pepper, Fine Fare and Party City.

Rock Asylum Returns to Staten Island For Sandy Victims

Encore! Encore! That's what the children living at the Mr. Manresa shelter wanted from Paulie Z, founder of Rock Asylum Foundation, and that's exactly what they got. On Saturday, December 1st, Camp TLC provided transportation from Mt. Manresa to Gateway Academy on Staten Island for another full day of fun activities and events. Because of how much the kids loved Paulie's performance last week, he was invited back.

In typical Paulie Z fashion, he wanted to make this week's concert bigger and better than the last one so he brought some friends. Cherie Martorana, lead singer of Rubix Kube, the most original 80's tribute band, brought her larger than life personality and enthusiasm to the concert. Marin Silverman who is 11 years old and Rock Asylum Foundation Junior Committee Chairperson did a rockin' duet with Paulie. They sang two songs they co-wrote including "Drafting" a song about one of the steps of the writing process. Singer Laura Hankin, who sings for kids for a living, also generously donated her time and talent to make the concert even more special.

All this singing, dancing, and playing was bound to work up an appetite. Thankfully, our friends at Bella Mama Rose of Staten Island, generously donated a delicious buffet for all to enjoy. It was a day full of good friends, old and new, good food, good music, and great fun.

Recap: Camp TLC Retreat for Young Sandy Victims

Paulie Z of Rock Asylum Foundation spent some quality time with the kids living in the shelter at Mt. Manresa on Staten Island on Saturday, November 24th.

The kids were treated to an upbeat, fun, interactive musical performance that included some original Z Brothers songs like “In the City” and “The Stop Song”, along with some classic kids’ songs like “The Wheels on the Bus”.
There was even an impromptu sing along of “Party In The USA” when the kids requested a Miley Cyrus song. The kids got an extra special treat when Paulie let them take turns strumming the guitar.

One of the parents commented on how it was so good to see her kids acting like kids again. A great time was had by all.
Special thanks to Camp TLC for sponsoring and running the event and for inviting us to participate.

Rock Asylum's Edge Rock Ball Is A Huge Success!

On Friday, October 12th, at Webster Hall in NYC, Rock Stars, Celebrity Chefs, Designers, Actors, Athletes, Educators, Fans and Supporters all came together for an incredible night of raising funds and awareness for Rock Asylum Foundation. Rock Asylum is a non- profit organization that teaches children their academics through original rock music. Highlights included Dee Snider joining ZO2 on stage to sing “Highway To Hell”, followed by an All-Star Jam where Dee, members of ZO2, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal of Guns N’ Roses, Steve Augeri of Journey, and Honoree Principal Lisa Fernandez blew the roof off of Webster Hall with an amazing rendition of “We’re Not Gonna Take It”. VH1 Classic sent out a tweet about this memorable moment. Principal Lisa Fernandez of PS 119 in Brooklyn, NY, whose school was the pilot school for Rock Asylum this past year, was the very first Rock Asylum Foundation honoree.

Guests in the sold out VIP section got to mingle with Rock Legends while sampling the culinary offerings of Top Chef contestant Danny Gagnon and Executive Chef of Manhattan Proper Rachon Banks. Lucky winners in the silent auction took home amazing prizes such as vacation packages, one of a kind rock and roll memorabilia, and guitars signed by stars of stage and screen.Paul Zablidowsky, Founder and Executive Director of Rock Asylum, and lead singer of ZO2 shared, “It was one of the proudest days of my life to see so many people come out to help Rock Asylum. We’ve had such an exciting year launching school programs and writing new songs. In addition, we’ve seen a remarkable impact on test scores. The event was a celebration as well as a benefit!”

Rock Asylum & Camp TLC Bring Music To Childrens' Hospital

Last week Rock Asylum joined forces with Camp TLC to bring music to the kids of St. Mary's Children's' Hospital in Queens, NY. Camp TLC is a non-profit organization that brings the "camp experience" to children at hospitals and homeless shelters around the country. Music is a big part of their programing and they reached out to Paulie Z to come in and do a week's worth of music classes and performance at St. Mary's. The ages of the kids ranged from infants to teenagers. There was instant bond between Paulie and the children and in true Rock Asylum spirit they even wrote an original song together called Makes Me Happy. Click here to read Paulie's blog about his experience there.

Paulie Z In Local Newspaper For Career Day

P.S. 196's career day has become an annual tradition: Each June, around 100 professionals spanning different lines of work - firefighters, police officers, salespeople, reporters, politicians - descend on the Bushwick Avenue school to discuss their jobs with the students. This year the school invited Paulie Z to come and speak about his life as a rock star, TV star and more recently founder of a non-profit organization. Paulie Z spoke about writing, recording and touring and how it is important to stay healthy in order to be succesful which is why he doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs. He also shared one of his secrets to happiness which is to figure out what you're good at and love to do and do that as often as possible and aim to make that your vocation. Needless to say after an empowering speech and rockin' dance song (of course he brought his guitar) the kids were super inspired. Paulie has already said that he is looking forward to next year.

Rock Asylum First Annual Kids Benefit Concert

Rock Asylum Foundation’s first ever Rock Concert for kids was a blast. Kids of all ages were in attendance and Paulie Z and the Rock Asylum band made sure to include and engage all of them in their performance. The set included the newly released “Scientific Method” and was the premiere of “The Words that Are Long Song”. The band also killed it on covers of everything from the Beatles to Lady Gaga. Some other highlights of the event were the famous purple carpet, delicious food provided by Top Chef Contestant Danny Gagnon, the comedy and magic of Adam Auslander, and the awesome emcee Cherie from Rubix Kube warming up the crowd and even making a special guest appearance on stage for some background vocals. The vibe in the room was positive and upbeat as kids were helping other kids.

We were able to raise over $3,500 and have already used a portion of that money to provide James Madison School #10 in Garfield, NJ with a Rock Asylum concert. In addition, Paulie Z is writing an anti-bullying song with 5th grade students from that school that will be recorded thanks to the generous donations we received on May 20th.
